Located in the center of Baku, the unique historical site "Icheri Shexer" is the beating heart of the city of Baku. Situated near the sea, this city was the birthplace of ancient Baku.

Famous  Icheri -Shexer"  City: Icheri Shexer"  is the oldest residential district of Baku. In 1977, it was declared a historical and cultural non-material asset, and in 2000, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Ancient city: Icheri Shexer" is often referred to as the " Icheri Shexer"  Fortress" because it is surrounded by well-preserved fortress walls. People were already living in Inner City in the VIII-XI centuries. Icheri Shexer"  is also surrounded by well-preserved fortress walls. More than 1300 families live on its 221,000 m² area. The presence of thick fortress walls indicates that they were built by skilled architects. When traveling through this area, we see that the streets are separated by narrow lanes. Historian-ethnographer Alibaba Babayev says that in the Middle Ages, narrow lanes were considered a means to eliminate enemies, and small windows were used to protect local residents from heat and cold.

City buildings: Over time, many unique structures have been preserved behind semi-destroyed fortress walls: the Shirvanshahs Palace complex, mausoleums, divanhana (ceremonial hall), mosque, Maiden Tower, minarets, as well as caravanserais and baths. In the XV century, when the capital of the Shirvanshahs was moved from Shamakhi to Baku, massive construction began within Inner City. It was during this period that the gem of the fortress, the Shirvanshahs Palace, was built.

It should be noted that in the XVII-XIX centuries, fortress walls were built around Icheri Shexer" Baku. This is where rulers' palaces and residential neighborhoods were located. From 1747 to 1806, Baku was the capital of the khanate.

Modern city: Despite changes in our city, including the construction of new buildings and the development of settlements, "Icheri Shexer"  retains its antiquity and adds elements of modernity in the 21st century.

In the southeast of Icheri Shexer"  is Istiglaliyyat Street, in the northwest is Neftchilar Avenue, and in the east is a metro station of the same name. In the east of Inner City is Aziz Aliyev Street, and in the southwest is Vahid Park.
