Baku Boulevard

Baku Boulevard (officially known as Seaside National Park) is one of the most famous and iconic public spaces in Baku. Located on the shores of the Caspian Sea, this park is an ideal place for both residents and tourists to relax and spend time. Baku Boulevard has played a significant role in the city’s architecture and social life, both historically and in modern times.

History of Baku Boulevard: Baku Boulevard was first established in 1909. The idea of its creation was proposed by the city’s wealthy oil industrialists, as there was a need for a wide, landscaped space along the coastline. From the beginning, Baku Boulevard was designed as a project to modernize and beautify the city.

In the early years, the coastline of the boulevard was narrow, but over time it was expanded, acquiring a modern appearance. The length of the boulevard increased, extending along Neftchilar Avenue, and it became one of the most prominent coastal centers of the city. Throughout the 20th century, Baku Boulevard was expanded and improved several times.

Modern Baku Boulevard: Today, Baku Boulevard spans approximately 25 kilometers along the coast and is one of the city's largest recreational areas. The Seaside National Park includes walking paths, parks, entertainment centers, cafes, restaurants, and sports and play areas.

Main Features of Baku Boulevard:

  1. National Park: Baku Boulevard has received the official status of Azerbaijan’s National Park. It features numerous green zones and landscaped areas. Trees, flower gardens, and fountains are located throughout the boulevard.
  2. Park Bulvar Shopping Center: Located within the boulevard area, Park Bulvar is one of the city's most popular shopping and entertainment centers, with various stores, restaurants, cinemas, and entertainment zones.
  3. Baku Crystal Hall: Baku Crystal Hall, located within the boulevard, was built in 2012 for the Eurovision Song Contest. It now hosts concerts, events, and sports competitions.
  4. Baku Funicular: The Baku Funicular, located near the Seaside Boulevard, is an interesting mode of transport used to ascend the city’s higher points. It connects the hilly areas of the city with the coastal boulevard, offering scenic views.
  5. Museums and Historical Sites: Several museums and historical sites are located within the boulevard area. The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum stands out with its unique architecture and rich collection. The Miniature Book Museum, which showcases the world’s smallest printed books, is another point of interest.
  6. Little Venice: Located in part of the boulevard, the Little Venice area is popular with residents and tourists alike. It features small canals where visitors can take boat rides, creating a romantic atmosphere in the city.
  7. Baku Ferris Wheel: The large Ferris wheel on the Seaside Boulevard offers breathtaking views of the city and the Caspian Sea. This attraction is very popular among both locals and tourists.

Public Importance of Baku Boulevard: Baku Boulevard is not just a place for relaxation; it also plays a key role in the city’s public and cultural life. Throughout the year, cultural events, concerts, festivals, and exhibitions are held here. The boulevard also serves as a venue for sporting events, such as the Baku Marathon.

The boulevard reflects both the modern face of Baku and its historical development. While the city's architectural styles have changed over time, Baku Boulevard remains the heart of the city and holds an important place in Baku’s urban history.

Future Plans for Baku Boulevard: Work on expanding and modernizing the boulevard continues. The areas known as New Boulevard extend to the outskirts of Baku, further contributing to the city’s development and better connecting the boulevard with other parts of the capital.

Baku Boulevard remains one of Baku’s symbols, blending history with modernity, and continues to be a favorite spot for both locals and tourists.
