 Duplex apartment

25-30 years ago, duplex apartments were mostly built in private houses, but today they have become widely popular in new constructions. In modern times, the demand for duplex apartments is steadily increasing, as many families prefer this type of housing. A duplex apartment consists of two floors and is commonly found in newly constructed buildings located close to the city or in central areas. The first and second floors are separated by a partition and connected by an internal staircase. The main feature of duplex apartments is the presence of two levels in one unit, which makes the living space more spacious and comfortable. These types of apartments typically have more rooms, with an area ranging from 100 to 150 square meters, and sometimes even more. A standard duplex usually includes a living room, several bedrooms, a bathroom, and a kitchen.

How did the first duplex apartment emerge?

Duplex apartments first appeared in England in the 19th century. To expand the space of small apartments, a second floor was added to the upper part of the unit. A staircase was built to separate the upper and lower levels. The first floor typically consisted of a living room, kitchen, and bathroom, while the second floor housed the bedrooms. Over time, as children grew up and started families of their own, they often wanted to live close to their parents. To accommodate this, a separate kitchen and en-suite bathrooms were added to the second level, ensuring both comfort and privacy. Although originally designed for one family, these apartments proved suitable for two families to live together. Initially, these homes lacked originality, but over time they were built more symmetrically and with a more civilized design.

Features of Duplex Apartments:

  • Spacious layout: The upper floor is usually reserved for bedrooms, while the lower floor is designed for the living room, kitchen, and other common areas.
  • Additional privacy: Duplex apartments offer better separation of personal and communal spaces. With bedrooms on one floor and social spaces on another, privacy and comfort are enhanced.
  • Natural light and views: The two-floor design allows for the installation of larger windows, providing better sunlight penetration and making the apartment brighter and more airy.
  • Large terraces and balconies: Some duplex apartments feature spacious terraces and balconies with access from both floors, creating extra space for outdoor living without leaving the home.
  • Interior design: Duplex apartments often have modern and functional interior designs. Depending on preferences, a sense of space and organization can be achieved. Even with minimal furniture, it's possible to create a comfortable and cozy living environment.
